Representative Team

Since 1920 the SAL has played representative fixtures against other AFA-affiliated leagues and universities such as Oxford, Cambridge and London. Before World War II the League also played an annual series of matches against public school teams in the home counties.

In 2007 the League was invited by the Football Association to enter its 'National League System Cup', a competition organised to find an English representative for the UEFA Regions Cup. The majority of Leagues invited to enter were part of the National League System - the non-league football 'pyramid' but a number of other prominent amateur leagues were also included. The AFA was also represented by the Amateur Football Combination.

The SAL won the competition at the first attempt, beating the Amateur Football Combination 2-0 at the semi-final stage and going on to win 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw with the Midland Combination (Division 1) at Coventry City's Ricoh Arena in May 2008.

The side duly travelled to Italy in October 2008 to play the Intermediary Round of the UEFA Regions Cup against teams from Ireland, Scotland and Italy. Despite remaining undefeated and not conceding a goal the team narrowly missed out to the Irish team on goal-difference and did not qualify for the Final tournament.
